Amazing, talented and dazzling, Angela Bassett's presence is felt in theaters and on stages as well as on television screens around the world. Angela Evelyn Bassett was born on the 16th of August, 1958, in New York City, to Betty Jane (Gilbert), Social worker and Daniel Benjamin Bassett, a preacher's son. Bassett, her sister D'nette, and their mother grew up in St. Petersburg. Betty was a single mom, stressed the importance education for her children. Through the aid of a scholarship to study, Bassett matriculated into Yale University. She graduated with a B.A. in 1980. in African-American studies from Yale University. In 1983, she earned an MA of Fine Arts Degree from the Yale School of Drama. It was at Yale where Bassett got married to her husband Courtney B. Vance, who graduated in 1986 from the Drama School.Bassett first appeared in small roles on The Cosby Show (1984) and Spenser: For Hire (1985), but it was not until 1990 that she began to get television roles brought her notice. She was astonished to play Tina Turner in What's Love Got To Do With It (1993) the film that marked her debut role. Bassett's performance was rewarded with an Academy Award nomination and a Golded Globe Award for Best Actress.
