Hayley Elizabeth Atwell was born in London, England. She holds dual citizenship with the United Kingdom as well as the United States. Hayley Mills was Hayley's only child. Alison (Cain), her mother and Grant Atwell were motivational speakers. They met in London in Dale Carnegie's workshop "How to Win Friends & Influence People". Her mother is English (with Irish ancestry) and her father is American and was born in Kansas City, Missouri, and is from Native-American descent (his Native American name is Star Touches Earth). Her parents split when she reached at the age of two. Her father returned to America and Hayley remained with her mother in London however she spent her summers in Missouri with her father. The theater was viewed by Hayley's mother as an important experience shared by all, so she was introduced to theater from a young age. She was 11 years old when she saw Ralph's stage production of Hamlet. She would work alongside him in the film The Duchess (2008). She was a student at Sion-Manning Roman Catholic Girl's school in West London, where she excelled academically. She completed her A-levels at the London Oratory School. She took two years out of her studies, going on trips with her father, and working as a casting director.
