Laura Leggett Linney was born in New York City on February 5, 1964, into a theatre family. Her father was a well-known playwright Romulus Linney, whose great-grandfather was a congressman from North Carolina. The mother of her daughter, Miriam Anderson (Leggett), is a nurse. Linney was raised in a family that was that was far from her father because her parents separated at the age of 6. However, Linney was surrounded by his profession from the time she was a child. Linney graduated from Brown University in 1986 and trained in acting at Juilliard and the Arts Theatre School, Moscow. She started her career acting on Broadway, receiving positive notices for her performances in plays such as "Hedda Gabler" and "Six Six Degrees of Separation". Linney's film career began in the 90s, beginning with tiny roles in the film Lorenzo's oil (1992), and Dave (1993). The latter was one of the PBS adaptations of Armistead Mapin's "Tales of the City", she was in the role of Mary Anne Singleton.
