At 16 years of age Melanie Lynskey dazzled moviegoers with her stunning debut in Peter Jackson's revered psychological crime film, Heavenly Creatures (1994). TIME's Richard Corliss praised her bold performance as Pauline Parker, a teenager who lost her best friends Kate Winslet and spiraled out of control. The film also presented her the Best Actress trophy for New Zealand. After a hiatus of three years attending university and moving to Los Angeles, Lynskey made a welcome return to the silver screen when she was played by Drew Barrymore's charming stepsister in Andy Tennant's feminist take on the fairy tale, Ever After: A Cinderella Story (1998). Parts in Detroit Rock City (1999)"But I'm a cheerleader" (1999), Coyote Ugly (2000), Snakeskin (2001), Abandon (2002), Sweet Home Alabama (2002), Shattered Glass (2003) and Clint Eastwood's Oscar-nominated war drama Flags of Our Fathers (2006) followed.
