MacDonald was born Norman Gene MacDonald in Quebec City, Quebec on October 17th, 1959. He began his career as a stand-up comedian. His first gig was writing for The Dennis Miller Show (1992) and later Roseanne (1988). When he was working on Roseanne (1988), he was noticed by Lorne Michaels, who liked his stand-up and offered him a job as a host on Saturday Night Live (1975).MacDonald became widely popular when he became the Weekend Update anchor with his signature line, "And now the fake news". He was on the air until September 24, 1994 to the 13th of December 1997 when he was fired by Don Ohlmeyer, president of NBC in the west coast. He officially quit the show in the month of March, 1998. His final weekend update was on the 13th of December 1997. Dirty Work (1998) was the film he begun working on in the summer of 1997. It came out two months later. In March 1999, his program, named Norm (1999) was put out on ABC and ran for a three-season run. At the time, he also starred in the film Screwed (2000), opposite Dave Chappelle.
