Salma Hayek was conceived in Coatzacoalcos (Mexico) on September 2, 1966. Her father is Lebanese and her mother is Spanish/Mexican. She saw Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) at the local theater, and decided she wanted to become an actor. When she was 12, she was enrolled to the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans, Louisiana. She attended Mexico City's prestigious University of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans in Louisiana. She was soon prepared to pursue acting with a serious level. Teresa (1989), the soap opera that was highly successful which earned her fame in Mexico and gave her the lead role. However, eager to create films and to explore her talent as well as passion, she left both Teresa (1989) and Mexico in 1991. Fans devastated by the news spread rumors that she was in an affair with Mexico's President and left to escape his wife's fury. She travelled to Los Angeles. She entered Hollywood with a naive optimism and quickly learned that Latina actresses were typecast as the mistress maid or local prostitute
