Salma Hayek was born on September 2 1996 in Coatzacoalcos, Mexico. Her father is of Lebanese descent and her mother has Mexican/Spanish descent. After having seen Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (1971) in a local movie theatre, she decided she wanted to become an actress. At age 12, she was sent to the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans, Louisiana. After attending Mexico City's prestigious university Universidad Iberoamericana, she felt ready to pursue acting seriously.She quickly landed the lead part in Teresa (1989) which was a massively successful soap opera that brought her star status in her native Mexico. But, determined to make films and explore her talent as well as her passion for acting, she left Teresa (1989) as well as Mexico in the year 1991. Fans devastated by the news spread rumors that she was involved in a secret affair with Mexico's President and left to avoid his wife's fury. She finally arrived in Los Angeles. She walked into Hollywood with naive enthusiasm and quickly learned that Latina actors were cast as the mistress maid or local prostitute. By late 1992, she'd landed just a few roles. She was featured on Street Justice (1991), The Sinbad Show (1993), Nurses (1991), and was a sexy girl in Dream On (1990)
