Lancaster was born in Overland Park in Kansas where she was raised by Daniel who was her older brother. Her mother, Barbara, was a household worker, and her father, Michael, was in real estate. It was his job that led the family to Mission Viejo, California when Sarah was just ten years old. Shortly after moving to Southern California, she began enrolling in acting classes and landed a talent agent. After a couple of months of driving from Orange County to Los Angeles to audition, she landed her first regular series professional part, playing "Rachel" in the 1993 series Saved by the Bell: The New Class (1993)
