Selena

Selena was 50 miles from Houston in Lake Jackson, Texas. She was the daughter of Marcella Quintanilla and Abraham Quintanilla Jr. Abraham established Papagayo Mexican Restaurant in Lake Jackson. Selena was nine years old when her father discovered her talent for singing. He formed a group consisting of Selena singing and her brother A.B. Quintanilla played bass and her younger sister Suzette Quintanilla was on drums. The group was named Los Dinos after a band Abraham was part during the 1950s and 1960s, often played at restaurants. Abraham started booking his band for weddings in Corpus Christi in 1981. It became their lifestyle. Selena as well as Los Dinos got their big break in 1987 when Selena was a fifteen-year-old girl, won the Tejano Music Award as Female Entertainer. Selena was given the Tejano Music Award for Female Entertainer of the Year in 1987. She also received the biggest record-label deal from Capitol Records, and six extremely profitable albums. Selena was able to launch her own clothing brand in 1992 and then wed Chris Perez, her guitarist. She was nominated for her first Grammy in 1994 for Best Mexican-American Record, and she took home the prize! Her first boutique opened in Corpus Christi (Texas) that year. On March 31, 1995, Selena was murdered by Yolanda Saldivar, her close friend and the president of her fan group.
