Sigourney Weaver

Sigourney Weaver was born Susan Alexandra Weaver, on October 8, 1949 in Leroy Hospital in New York City. Her father Sylvester L. Weaver Jr. who was a producer on television, initially desired Flavia to be her name because of his love for Roman history. He already had given her brother Trajan the name. Elizabeth Inglis, a British actress, was her mother. She had given up her career to support her family. Sigourney was raised in a virtual bubble of bliss, bliss and guilt, loved by nannies as well as maids. In 1959 the Weavers had resided in 30 households. Sigourney started attending the Brearly Girls' School in the year. However, her mother took her to Chapin which was a private school located in New York. Sigourney was quite a bit taller than most of her classmates (at 13 she was 5'10"), resulting in her constant being ridiculed and criticized for her height. In order to gain acceptance from them she was assigned the job of the class clown. In 1962, her family moved to San Francisco briefly, an uncomfortable experience for her. Then, they returned east to Connecticut and she was an pupil at the Ethel Walker School, facing similar issues to those she faced prior. In 1963 she changed her name to "Sigourney", after the character "Sigourney Howard" in F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" (her own birth name, Susan, was in honor of her mother's best friend ).
