Winona Ryder

"That's the first time I saw the entire Elia Kazan films, every one of John Cassavetes'," remembers Winona. She would show everything, including Gigi as well as An American In Paris. Those musicals with their incredible trippy scenes. My parents were smokers, and loved these musicals. Winona Horowitz was named after the Minnesota town in which she was born. She is the daughter of Michael and Cindy Horowitz, bohemians. The goddaughter of Sixties famous actor Timothy Leary, she was raised together with her three brothers, as an independent spirit. Bitten early by the acting bug Winona began studying acting at the American Conservatory Theatre in San Francisco at the age of 12, and was soon on the verge of pursuing an acting career in film. She chose the name Ryder in 1986 and began her acting career in Lucas, a teen drama about the angst of a teenager. Critics and audiences were impressed by Ryder's talent.
