Bernadette Peters (born Bernadette Lazzara; February 28, 1948) is an American actress, singer and children's book writer. In an extensive career that spans five decades, she has been featured in musical theatre, films and television, aswell as performing in solo concerts as well as recordings. She is among the most critically acclaimed Broadway performers, receiving nominations for seven Tony Awards, winning two (plus an honorary award) as well as nine Drama Desk Awards, winning three. Four of her Broadway cast albums on which she has appeared have won Grammy Awards.Regarded by many as the best interpreter of the works by Stephen Sondheim, Peters is most well-known for her work in the Broadway stage, including in the musicals Mack and Mabel, Sunday in the Park with George, Song and Dance, Into the Woods, The Goodbye Girl, Annie Get Your Gun and Gypsy.Peters began her career on stage as a child , and then a teenage actress in the 1960s as well as on television and in films in the 1970s. The public praised her for this earlier work, as well as her performances in The Muppet Show, The Carol Burnett Show as well as in various other TV shows, and for her roles in films like Silent Movie, The Jerk, Pennies from Heaven and Annie. Her return to the stage was in the late 1980s.
