Consider the many top-ranking executives that have had to endure difficult times in recent years, after prolonged periods of achievement. It's also possible to think of individuals you've met in lower-profile positions and have been forced to quit their jobs. Consider yourself: When the course of your leadership, have you ever been removed or pushed aside?Let's face it, to lead is to lead a dangerous life. While leadership is often depicted as an exciting and glamorous activity, one where you encourage others to follow you through bad and good times but this portrayal overlooks leadership's dark side: the inevitable attempts to take you out of the game. Those efforts are often justifiable. Leaders in high positions have to frequently pay for a flawed strategy or a series of bad decisions. Of course, there's always more. We're not talking about conventional office politics; we're talking about high-stake dangers you run into when you attempt to lead an organization through a difficult but necessary change. These times present high risks because any change that transforms an organization, regardless of whether it's a multibillion dollar company or the sales team of 10, requires that employees sacrifice certain aspects: their daily routines, loyalty, and ways of thinking. There is no reward to show for their sacrifices, other than the possibility of a better future.
