 Venus Williams , in full Venus Ebony Starr Williams, (born June 17, 1980, Lynwood, California, U.S.), American tennis player who, together with her sister Serena, revolutionized the sport with her strength and superb athleticism.Like Serena, her younger sister Serena, Venus was introduced to tennis at the public courts in Los Angeles by her father who recognized her talent and oversaw her growth. In 1994, she became a professional and was soon attracting attention with her strong serves and powerful ground strokes. Williams was the first female to be unseeded for the U.S. Open women’s finals in the open era. In 1997, she lost to Martina Hingis. In 2000 Williams took home both Wimbledon and the U.S. Open, and she successfully defended her titles in 2001.At the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney, Williams captured the gold medal in the singles competition and also won gold alongside her sister in the doubles event. In 2002, Serena beat Venus in the finals of the French Open, the U.S. Open, and Wimbledon In 2005, however, Venus won the Wimbledon championship. Despite suffering from injuries her participation was limited to only a handful of tournaments the next year. But she did go on to capture her fourth Wimbledon title in 2007. In 2008 Venus beat Serena to win her fifth Wimbledon title.
