Yao Ming (Chinese: Yao Ming ; born September 12, 1980) is a Chinese basketball executive and former professional player. He was a player with the Shanghai Sharks of the Chinese Basketball Association (CBA) as well as the Houston Rockets of the National Basketball Association (NBA). Yao was selected to play for the Western Conference in NBA All-Star Game eight more times and was named to All-NBA Team five more times. With a height of 2.29m (7 feet 6 inches), Yao was the NBA's tallest active player. Yao was born in Shanghai and started playing for the NBA when he was a teenager. Yao played for the Sharks senior team for five seasons during the CBA. His final year saw him win a championship. Yao was released by the Rockets after negotiations with both the CBA (the Sharks) and the Sharks. Yao was the first pick overall in the 2002 NBA draft. The Rockets were victorious in the opening round of the playoff series in 2009, their first series victory in the postseason since 1997. Yao reached the NBA playoffs four more times. Yao declared his retirement as a professional basketball player in July of 2011. He had suffered a series foot and ankle injuries that forced him to miss 250 games over his six previous seasons.
