Demi Moore was born in in 1962 in Roswell, New Mexico. Her father Charles Harmon left her mother Virginia Guynes (nee King) prior to the time Demi was born. Her stepfather Danny Guynes didn't add much stability to her life. Guynes had a variety of jobs and saw the family move 40 times. The parents kept on drinking, arguing and beating, until Guynes finally committed suicide. Demi quit school at the age 16, and went on to become a pinup girl. At 18 she married the rock star Freddy Moore; the marriage lasted four years. In her 20s, she began appearing on the soap opera General Hospital (1963). From the first salaries she started drinking and smoking cocaine. This went on for more than 3 years until Joel Schumacher threatened to remove her from St. Elmo's Fire (1985), after she got excessively high. After a week she was able to get withdrawal treatment. She remained completely clean.
