Jewel's debut album Pieces of You is a classic in '90s folk music. The singer has been making waves on the Billboard charts periodically since she first entered the music scene during the late '90s however, she's now looking to slow down for herself and her family.Jewel Kilcher came from humble beginnings in Homer, Alaska. Although she was born in Utah the family relocated to Alaska as a child. When her parents divorced, at the age of 8 and she moved to Alaska with her father and brother to live in a rural home without heat or plumbing in the indoors. They also had an outhouse and lived off the land, and basically cared for their own needs, away from the bustle of society. The Kilcher family currently stars on the Discovery Channel reality show Alaska: The Last Frontier if you want an inside look at what their daily lives are like. As a child, Jewel formed a little duo of singing together with her father Atz Kilcher. They would perform yodeling throughout towns at hotels and restaurants.Despite having the home of musicians, which instilled in her a passion for music, Jewel's father was difficult (and an alcoholic) and she made the decision to go to her own when she was 15. She received a scholarship to study at Interlochen Arts Academy in Michigan, raising the additional funds herself through a benefit concert for the high school of her hometown in Homer. The singer moved to San Diego, California, after graduating from high school. But it was not an easy way to be famous.
