The eldest of two daughters born to an white father and a black mother. Michael Michele Williams was born and raised in Evansville, Indiana. As young, she competed in volleyball and track during high school. But her forte was basketball. She was the most prominent forward for her school's top-ranked women's basketball team. Michael loved acting and relocated to New York City after she finished the high school in 1984. Her acting debut was in commercials and music videos. In 1988 she was invited to make an appearance in HBO's 1st & Ten. She was all set to make her debut as a feature film in Eddie Murphy's Harlem Nights (1989), but the deal fell through when she made a sexual harassment complaint against Murphy that was later settled out of the court.
