Millicent Simmonds

Millicent (Millie) Simmonds is a BAFTA nominated American actress from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania best known for Wonderstruck (2017), A Quiet Place (2018), A Quiet Place Part II (2020) and Helen & Teacher. Millicent is originally from Bountiful in Utah. She began telling stories and acting in American Sign Language at an young age. She was a part of the theater and drama club in her elementary school. She was performing the role of Puck in Midsummer Night's Dream. Because she'd never encountered Deaf characters like her on screen or on television however, she never imagined that she would be an actress. In 2016 her drama teacher received an email that contained a casting call for a Deaf actress to play the role of Rose in a film adaptation of the novel by Brian Selznick Wonderstruck. Millie was immediately spotted by her teacher and encouraged her to apply. Millie submitted a one-take audition, which brought Todd Haynes to tears. It was her first big performance. Millicent and Wonderstruck were premiered at Cannes as well as the New York Film Festival. Millicent was named one of the 2017's Breakthrough Entertainers by AP and Time Magazine listed Rose as one of the Top 10 film performances of the year. Millicent got her next big role in the film Regan Abbott in John Krasinski's horror-thriller A Quiet Place, working alongside Emily Blunt and Noah Jupe. Krasinski made it a point to cast Regan as a Deaf actress , and she did so authentically using American Sign Language. Her life experiences provided information and inspiration for the film's plot and sound design. A Quiet Place was a unexpected critical success, a surprise to be screened at the South By Southwest Film Festival.
