Millicent Simmonds

Millicent (Millie) Simmonds, an American actress, is nominated for the BAFTA nomination. She is well-known for Wonderstruck (2017) and A Quiet Place Part II (2018). Millicent is originally from Bountiful in Utah. She began telling stories and acting in American Sign Language at an young age. She joined the drama and theater clubs in her elementary school. She was acting as Puck in Midsummer Night's Dream. She didn't think she'd be an actress as she had never encountered Deaf characters like her in the screen or on television. In 2016, her drama instructor received an email with a casting call for a Deaf actress to play the role of Rose in a film adaptation of Brian Selznick's novel Wonderstruck. Millie was instantly spotted by her teacher and she advised her to submit an application. Millie gave a one-take audition that moved director Todd Haynes to tears, making her an incredible breakthrough performance. Millicent and Wonderstruck made their debut at Cannes as well as the New York Film Festival. AP listed her as one of the Breakthrough Entertainers for 2017 and Time Magazine listed Rose among the top 10 Movie Performances in 2017. Millicent was offered her first major role as Regan Abbott in John Krasinski's horror-thriller A Quiet Place, working with Emily Blunt and Noah Jupe. Krasinski was adamant about casting an Deaf actress to play Regan and also to use American Sign Language authentically. Her experiences were the basis as well as inspiration for the sound and story of the film. A Quiet Place premiered at the South By Southwest Film Festival and was a huge success.
