Millicent Simmonds

Millicent (Millie) Simmonds is a BAFTA nominated American actress from Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania best known for Wonderstruck (2017), A Quiet Place (2018), A Quiet Place Part II (2020) as well as Helen & Teacher. Millicent is originally from Bountiful, Utah and at a young age began performing and telling stories using American Sign Language. Millicent was part of the drama and theater club in her elementary school. She was Puck in Midsummer Night's Dream. She never expected to be an actress because she had never seen Deaf characters like her in the screen or on television. In 2016, her drama teacher was notified via email of a casting announcement for a Deaf actress wanted for the role of Rose in a film adaptation of Brian Selznick's novel Wonderstruck. Millie was immediately thought of by her teacher and she encouraged her to apply. Millie submitted a one-take audition that brought the film's director Todd Haynes to tears, making her a stunning debut performance. Millicent and Wonderstruck were premiered at Cannes as well as the New York Film Festival. Millicent was named one of the 2017's Breakthrough Entertainers by AP and Time Magazine listed Rose as one of the Top 10 film performances for the year. Millicent was cast in Regan Abbott, John Krasinski’s horror-thriller A Quiet Place. She was cast alongside Emily Blunt (Emily Blunt) and Noah Jupe. Krasinski was adamant about casting an Deaf actress to play Regan and also using American Sign Language authentically. Her experiences were the basis and inspiration for the sound and story of the film. A Quiet Place was a surprising critical hit, premiering at the South By Southwest Film Festival.
