Rihanna was born Robyn Rihanna Fenty in Bridgetown, St. Michael Barbados on the 20th of February 1988. She was married to Monica Braithwaite (an accountant) and Ronald Fenty (a warehouse supervisor). Her mother is Afro-Guyanese and her father is of Afro-Barbadian and British Isles ancestry. Rihanna was an island girl of the typical variety who went to Combermere sixth form school. Rihanna was a winner of numerous beauty contests and performed Mariah Carey's song Hero in a school talent show. Her life was changed completely when a close friend brought her in contact with Evan Rodgers, a producer from New York who was in Barbados on vacation with his wife, who is a native of Barbados. Rodgers arranged for her to go to New York to meet Jay-Z who is the director of Def Jam Records. He heard her sing and was convinced she was going to be extremely successful. When she joined Def Jam at age 16, it was her 16th birthday. She's enjoyed incredible success since that time.
