Rita Hayworth was the daughter of Margarita Carmen Cansino, a dancer's family, and was born in Brooklyn, New York on 17 October 1918. Her father, Eduardo Cansino Reina, was a dancer as was his father prior to him. He left Spain in 1913. Rita's American mother, Volga Margaret (Hayworth), who was of mostly Irish descent, met Eduardo in 1916 and was married the following year. Rita herself, too, trained as a dancer in order to follow in the footsteps of her parents. Her family joined her on stage at eight years old, when her family was captured in a film called La Fiesta (1926). She made her debut in film, though it was uncredited. Winfield R. Sheehan was Fox's studio chief. The first time she signed her contract, she made her debut in film at the age of 16 in Dante's Inferno (1935), then the film Cruz Diablo (1934). She continued to perform small bit parts in several films under the title of "Rita Cansino"
