Stephen Edwin King, second son of Donald Pillsbury King and Nellie Ruth King was born in Portland in Maine in 1947. His mother raised him along with his brother David following the divorce of his parents when he was just a toddler. His early years were lived in Fort Wayne (Indiana), where his father lived in the late '60s, and also in Stratford (Connecticut). When Stephen was 11, his mother brought her children back to Durham, Maine, for good. Her parents, Guy and Nellie Pillsbury had been unable to care for themselves due to old age, and Ruth King was persuaded by her sisters to take over the physical care of the couple who were elderly. Others provided financial support and the house was small in Durham. After Stephen's grandparents passed away, Mrs. King found work in the kitchens at Pineland the nearby facility for people who are mentally handicapped.
