John William Ferrell was born in Irvine, California, to Betty Kay (Overman), teacher and Roy Lee Ferrell, Jr., a musician. His parents are originally from Roanoke, North Carolina. Ferrell was born to Betty Kay (Overman) who was teacher, and Roy Lee Ferrell Jr. who was a musician. Ferrell was a performer at University High School in Irvine's morning announcements with hidden voices. He started as a part of the Los Angeles comedy/improvisation group The Groundlings, where fellow cast members Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph and the former Saturday Night Live (1975) repertory players such as Laraine Newman, Jon Lovitz and Phil Hartman started their careers. There that he met Chris Kattan and the two became friends. Both went on to Saturday Night Live (1975) later. He also has appeared in a number of TV shows such as Strangers with Candy (1999), Grace Under Fire (1993) and Living Single (1993) during his time with The Groundlings. Will also provided his voice to armless and legless dad of the cartoon family "The Oblongs".In 1995, he joined an official cast member on Saturday Night Live (1975) in the show's rapid recasting. In the first season, he was deemed to be the worst cast member. However, his talents of impersonations and range of characters propelled him to make him possibly the most memorable Saturday Night Live (1975) cast member.
