Margalit Ruth "Maggie" Gyllenhaal[aMargalit Ruth "Maggie" Gyllenhaal[a] (/'dZIl@nho:lborn November 16 1977) is an American actor as well as a writer, director, and producer. She is a member of the Gyllenhaal family and the younger sister of actor Jake Gyllenhaal. As a teenager, she appeared in minor roles in a few films of her father, Stephen Gyllenhaal, and later, she was in Donnie Darko (2001). Following that, she starred in Adaptation and Confessions of a Dangerous Mind in 2002, and Mona Lisa Smile (2003). Gyllenhaal received critical acclaim for her leading performances in the erotic romance comedy drama Secretary (2002) and the action drama Sherrybaby (2006) which both of which earned her the Golden Globe Award nomination. Following a string of commercially successful movies such as World Trade Center (2006), Gyllenhaal was recognized for her performance as Rachel Dawes, in The Dark Knight (2008).
