Elizabeth Montgomery

Elizabeth Montgomery was born in show business. Her parents were Robert Montgomery, a screen actor, and Elizabeth Allen, a Broadway actress. Elizabeth was a student at the Academy of Dramatic Arts and graduated from the Spence School, New York City. After three years of intensive training, Elizabeth was able to make her TV debut on Robert Montgomery Presents (1950) which was her father's 1950s drama series. Elizabeth also appeared on over 200 live television shows during the next decade. She once commented, "I guess you could claim that I'm a baby of TV." Notable early film roles included The Court-Martial of Billy Mitchell (1955) and Johnny Cool (1963). However, she is remembered for her leading role as the witch Samantha in the highly-rated ABC sitcom Bewitched (1964). Her mother Endora (Agnes Moorehead) and her look-alike cousin Serena (Montgomery wearing the dark hairstyle) and her husband, the advertising executive Darrin (first Dick York then Dick Sargent) - tried to keep her magical abilities from being exposed but often turned to her tricks to solve problems. Samantha noticed a tingle in her nose as like she was in the midst of witchcraft. After her debut and sole TV series was over, she moved to made-for-TV movies, many of which won critical praise: A Case of Rape (1974), The Legend of Lizzie Borden (1975), Black Widow Murders: The Blanche Taylor Moore Story (1993). She narrated the film The Panama Deception (1992) which was awarded an Academy Award in 1993. Although her death was recorded in reference works the family of her deceased said she was 57 when she died. Her cause of death was not disclosed by her family.
