The second oldest of two daughters, born to white parents and a black mother. Michael Michele Williams was born and was raised in Evansville, Indiana. She was a very athletic kid and played track and volleyball at high school, but her speciality was basketball. She was the most prominent forward on her school's top basketball team for women, which was ranked the highest. Michael loved theater and moved to New York City after she finished the high school in the year 1984. Her first acting jobs were in commercials as well as music videos. However, in 1988, she was offered an appearance as a guest in the HBO series 1st & Ten. The actress was set to make her debut as a feature film in Eddie Murphy's Harlem Nights (1989), but the deal fell through when she made a sexual harassment complaint against Murphy that was later settled outside of court. Michael made her debut in a feature film by appearing in a small role in the romantic Def by Temptation (1990), starring as the title character.
