Shirley MacLaine

Shirley MacLean Beaty was Shirley MacLaine's mother. Kathlyn Corinne MacLean was her mother. She was a drama teacher in Nova Scotia, Canada. Her father, Ira Owens Beaty was a real estate agent and psychologist from Virginia. Warren Beatty was her brother and was born March 30, 1937. Her ancestry includes English and Scottish.Shirley was tallest of her ballet classes at the Washington School of Ballet. When she was graduating from Washington-Lee High School, she took her bag and set off towards New York. The producer was constantly mispronouncing her name while she auditioned for Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II’s "Me and Juliet". Shirley MacLean Beaty became Shirley MacLaine then changed her name to Shirley MacLaine. She was later featured in "The Pajama Game", as a member of the chorus and understudy to Carol Haney. In the middle of the show's run Shirley was set to quit the show to play the lead role in "Can-Can" but ended up filling in for Haney who had injured her ankle and was unable perform. She was able to fill in for Carol, again, three months later, in the wake of another injury. This was the exact night that movie producer Hal B. Wallis was in the audience. Wallis signed MacLaine to a five-year deal to Paramount Pictures. A few months later she left to shoot The Trouble with Harry (1955)
