John William Ferrell was the son of Betty Kay (Overman), an educator and Roy Lee Ferrell Jr. A musician. His parents hail from Roanoke, North Carolina. Ferrell was born to Betty Kay (Overman), teacher, and Roy Lee Ferrell, Jr., a musician. He was featured in the morning announcements at University High School in Irvine's morning announcements with hidden voices. Ferrell began his career as an actor in the comedy/improv troupe The Groundlings in Los Angeles. There, he met Ana Gasteyer, Maya Rudolph and other performers from Saturday Night Live (1975), repertory players like Jon Lovitz, Phil Hartman, and Laraine Newman. He was introduced to Chris Kattan there and they became close friends. Both of them appeared to Saturday Night Live (1975). During his time with The Groundlings, he has been featured on a variety of television shows including Strangers with Candy (1999), Grace Under Fire (93) and Living Single (1993). Will is also the voice of the legless, armless dad of "The Oblongs" cartoon family.
