Winona Ryder

Winona Laura Horowitz was Winona Ryder's mother. She was born in Olmsted County Minnesota. Her name is taken from Winona, Minnesota. She is the daughter of publisher of writer Cynthia (Istas) and Michael Horowitz (a publisher and bookseller). Her father is Russian Jewish and Romanian Jewish. She was born in Northern California in a ranch community without electricity. She is the goddaughter of Timothy Leary. Her parents were close with Beat poet Allen Ginsberg. They once edited "Shaman Woman Mainline Lady" which was a collection of poems about the experience of drugs in the literature. It contained one Louisa May Alcott piece. Ryder was later cast in the leading role of Josephine March in the adaptation of the novel by this author Little Women (1994).Ryder moved with her parents to Petaluma, California when she was ten years old and began acting classes at the American Conservatory Theater. When she was 13 she participated in an audition on video for the movie Desert Bloom (1986), but was not selected for the role. However, director David Seltzer spotted her and made her the lead for the role of Lucas (1986). When telephoned to ask how she'd like her name appear on the credits she suggested Ryder as her father's Mitch Ryder & The Detroit Wheels album played in the background.
